Toros Come Up Short in 2-1 Setback Against Dixie State

CARSON -- Sophomore Jordyn Merrill knocked in her first goal of the season at the 39:18 mark to knot the game against visiting Dixie State, but the Red Storm had the answer in the form of a loose ball score in the 64th minute to take a 2-1 decision on a cool Monday afternoon in Toro Stadium.

The Toros dip to 0-6-1 will the loss, while scoring for the second-consecutive game.  DSU, meanwhile, improves to 2-3-1 on the year.

The game was scoreless midway through the first half when the visitors broke through with the first score.  After collecting a rebound inside the penalty box, Erica Gonzalez aimed and fired and beat Toro keeper Michelle Mendez far post at the 26:37 mark.

Much like Friday's game against UC San Diego, CSUDH again rallied, this time behind Merrill, who lofted a shot from the left side of the pitch over the head of Dixie State keeper Danica Nusink to knot the game at 1-1 13 minutes later.

But just like the contest against the Tritons, the visitors got the last word in as Jennifer Mason connected for her third goal of the year after collecting a loose ball to Mendez's right, and pulled her shot to the far lower post for the eventual game winner.

The Toros rattled off a two-shot edge in each period to out-shoot the Red Storm 16-12, with Sami Feinstein tallying a team-high 4 attempts, while Mendez finished with seven saves compared to five for Nusink.

CSUDH will now look to earn its first win in CCAA play as it hosts Chico State on Friday, set for a 4:30 pm first kick at Toro Stadium.
