Golden Eagles Squeak By Toros in 1-0 Decision

Box Score

CARSON -- Riding a three-game win streak and sitting atop the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Cal State Dominguez Hills won the battle by out-shooting visiting Cal State L.A. 30-10, but the Golden Eagles won the war after notching the game's lone goal in the ninth minute to take both games of the regular season series.

Forward Israel Murguia led the Toros with nine shots in the loss, including three on goal, as CSUDH fell into a 3-way tie for second place in the CCAA.

CSULA's Sigifredo Torres was the story early on, firing off a pair of shots that were blocked by the Toro defense in the first six minutes of play.

That tenacity finally paid off two minutes ater after Halil Tozar dribbled down the heart of the Toro defense and fed Torres, who beat CSUDH keeper Chase Gentry at 8:41 after the true freshman came out of his box looking to intercept the pass.

That score inspired the hosts as CSUDH rattled off a 13-3 shot advantage the rest of the period, only to have CSULA keeper Mike Beigarten stone seven of the Toro shots on goal.

The offensive effort for CSUDH increased after the break as the Toros out-shot CSULA 17-4 but Beigarten and the Golden Eagle defense were up to the challenge as just two shots were on frame, with both being repelled by the CSULA keeper.

CSUDH kept its foot on the offensive pedal, as three shots in the final five minutes looked to the tie game, but the CSULA defense blocked two of the attempts with the other going wide to preserve the 1-0 win for the visitors.

Beigarten finished with nine saves compared to one for Gentry, with Joey Chica (6) and Pedro Velasquez (4) tallying at least four shots in the loss.

The Toros' CCAA schedule doesn't get any easier as they travel to No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday after the Broncos picked up their seventh-straight win tonight, a 2-1 decision at Chico State.
