POMONA -- Down 1-nil with less than two minutes left in regulation, Cal State Dominguez Hills earned a penalty kick at the 88:04 mark and freshman
Juan Calderon made it count as the Toros drew with host Cal Poly Pomona in an intense southern California match-up between two perennial powers.
The Toros move to 5-4-4 overall, and 3-2-2 in CCAA play.
Cal Poly Pomona doubled the Toros on shot attempts by a 20 to 10 count, but CSUDH saw four of those shots on frame, equaling CPP's four shots on goal as well.
After a scoreless first half, the hosts broke through in the 80th minute to take a 1-0 lead late.
That's where the score remained until the 89th minute when CPP committed a foul that warranted a penalty kick, which Calderon converted to knot the game.
CPP had one final shot attempt with 0:32 left in regulation, but it sailed high to preserve the draw.
The teams combined for 20 fouls and five cautions, with each side credited with three saves.
CSUDH will look to get back into the win column on Sunday, hosting Cal State East Bay for a 2 pm first touch.
