Toros Back on Track After 2-0 Win at No. 7 Cal State L.A.

Box Score
LOS ANGELES -- There's still a lot of soccer to be played, but the watershed moment for the CSUDH men's soccer team that was a lost weekend hosting Chico State and CS Stanislaus has produced consecutive wins, the last coming this afternoon in a 2-0 victory at 7th-ranked Cal State L.A. as senior Billy Gutierrez drove home the game-winner on the goal of the year.

After taking a 1-0 win over visiting UC San Diego two days ago in the Home Depot Center's Main Stadium, the Toros carried that momentum into the early going against a Cal State L.A. team that carried a No. 7 ranking and unbeaten record into its home stadium.

With nearly 35 minutes elapsed in the first half, Antonio Garcia began the scoring charge with a 40 yard dash through the Golden Eagle defense before sending a high-fading ball towards the left side of the top of the box.

There, Gutierrez took the ball on the fly and left-footed his volley over CSULA keeper Jose Martinez with heavy topspin, where it settled into the back of the net far post for a 1-0 lead at the 34:56 mark.

Ten minutes into the second frame, the Toros doubled their lead with Gutierrez on the starting end of the scoring push.

Collecting the ball 50 yards out, Gutierrez sent his ball that beat the CSULA backline which Jordan Rover collected, and the senior beat Martinez 1v1 for the insurance goal.

The teams combined for 35 whistles, 19 on the Toros, and 3 cautions, all on the hosts.

CSULA also out-shot its cross-town rival 19-13, including an 11-5 edge in the second half, but the Toros garnered one more corner in the win.

CSUDH, now 5-2-1, 3-2-1 CCAA, continues southern division league road action next week as it travels to San Francisco State and Cal Poly Pomona.
