Toros Solid in 2-0 Win Over Humboldt State

Box Score
Carson, CA -- Midfielder Melanie DeSalvo and forward Jessica Murphy tallied a goal apiece in each half as Cal State Dominguez Hills picked up its third-consecutive win in a 2-0 decision over visiting Humboldt State.  The victory moves the Toros to 7-5, 5-2 CCAA and, coupled with Cal State San Bernardino's loss earlier this afternoon, to the top of the CCAA South Division standings.

The Toros had the game's first good look in the 29th minute after Yvonne Vasquez won a 50/50 ball on the HSU goal line, and dribbled towards the Jack goal.  Vasquez then sent a pass to a waiting Murphy, whose blast from 6 yards out was blocked by the HSU defense.

That missed opportunity proved a formality as DeSalvo intercepted a clearing pass in the 32nd minute, and sent her shot past diving HSU keeper Kelly Sandberg for a 1-0 Toro lead entering the half.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, HSU's Sandberg came off her line to challenge a charging Vasquez, prompting the senior forward to slip a pass to Murphy five feet in front of the Jack net.  Murphy, however, pulled her shot wide, keeping HSU within striking distance.

That missed opportunity again proved temporary as the Murphy-Vasquez connection struck at 69:28 to give CSUDH a 2-0 lead.  After dribbling down the HSU goal line, Vasquez sent a cross which Murphy headed high into the Jack net for an insurance goal, and the final scoring of the match.

Toro keeper Alyssa Congdon was credited with one save on the night in notching her third-consecutive shutout, while Sandberg made six in the HSU loss.

CSUDH looks to win its fourth-straight on Sunday morning as 12th-ranked Sonoma State visits Carson for an 11:30 am first kick.
