Carson, CA -- Senior Yvonne Vasquez made sure she and her fellow seniors were victorious in their last regular season home game in Toro Stadium as she connected for one goal and an assist in CSUDH's 5-1 win over 12th-ranked NAIA Cal State San Marcos this afternoon, sending seniors Monique Castro, Cassie McKay and Kelly Matosian out in style.
After a pregame ceremony honoring the quartet, the Toros wasted little time in notching the game's first score. Receiving a throw-in at the 2:24 mark, Vasquez headed the ball towards a waiting Kristan Boyle in front of the net, who fed Karina Jahn for the tap-in.
Jahn did the honors eight minutes later after collecting a Boyle Cross at the top of the box, and blasting her shot through the hands of CSUSM keeper Brittani Salmon, giving CSUDH a 2-0 lead entering the half.
Caslyn Wells made it 3-nil just five minutes into the second half, taking a one-timer from Melanie DeSalvo and beating Cougar reserve Kaycee Gunion, who entered after the break, and Vasquez added her goal of the night two minutes later as her header found the upper corner for the score.
Freshman Camille Escalera got into the scoring in the 69th minute as Jessica Murphy found Matosian at the top of the box, allowing Matosian to send her pass to a waiting Escalera for the score.
The visitors finally got on the board in the 81st minute as Taylor Schurman connected with under 10 minutes left in regulation, but it was much too little too late for the Cougars, who were handed their worst loss of the year.
CSUDH, now 11-7, looks to continue its newfound momentum on the road next weekend when they conclude CCAA play at Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino.
