SONOMA, Calif. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills golf team made history today by reversing a five-stroke deficit after day one of the Dominican Spring Invitational, firing a 2-under in this morning's final round to claim the team title by seven strokes.

This marks the first team win NCAA West Region competition in the program's history.

CSUDH trailed Menlo after shooting a +12 over yesterday's two rounds, but roared back to fire a -2, the second-lowest score of the day.

Coupled with Menlo shooting an 18-over today, the Toros raced past the Oaks and into the top spot by day's end, finishing seven shots ahead of runner-up Jessup, eight shots ahead of Vanguard and 11 shots ahead of host Dominican.

Individually, Zachary Iwashita set the tone for the Toros, beginning today in second place and ending it in the same position after firing a 1-over to finish even for the tournament with a 216 (71-72-73). 

Aaron Sanchez played his best round of the tournament to move up 11 spots to a tie for 4th place, coming within one stroke of his teammate with a 217 (72-77-68).

Sam Song moved up one position to 9th with a 219 (73-75-71), with Trent Fitzerald placing 19th with a 224 (75-75-74) and Troy Song coming in 26th at 232 (83-75-74).

Individually, Vanguard's Alex Elia claimed medalist honors with a 3-under 213 for the two-day tournament.

The Toros compete next at 51st Hanny Stanislaus invitational at the Turlock Golf & Country Club, beginning Monday, April 13, at 8 am.
