Nighthawks Stun Toros in NCAA Tournament Third Round

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team saw its 2022 season come to a halt in the NCAA Division II Championship third round Thursday after No. 8 Northwest Nazarene rallied with two goals late to upset the No. 4 Toros 3-2 at the campus of St. Mary's.

It is another surprising upset for the Nighthawks (15-3-3), who eliminated top-seeded and defending national champions Cal State LA last week to reach the third round.

The Toros finish the season 15-2-5 with a CCAA championship.

Dominguez Hills was the dominant team at Sigma Beta Chi Field, outshooting Northwest Nazarene 23-13 overall, 6-3 on goal. The Toros also had possession of the ball 61 percent of the match.

The Nighthawks took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Alan Soto Ortiz made a few touches at the top of the box and caught the Toros defensive line distracted when he shot it to the upper right corner and out of Sebastian Ascencio's reach.

Dominguez Hills had a key opportunity to tie the match when a Nighthawk handball awarded the Toros a penalty kick. Martin Velasquez took the shot to the right side that hit the post, keeping the Toros behind a goal.

The Toros went into halftime trailing 1-0 for the first time in the season.

The pressure was still put on by the Toros offense and it wasn't until the 61st minute when they broke through. Michael McKibbin sent the ball into the box that just missed the foot of Sulaiman Bah, but Nick Walker was behind the CCAA Offensive Player of the Year to put the finishing touch and tie the match at 1-1.

The freshman came through again in the 83rd minute. Bah took a corner kick from the left side that found the head of David Aguilera. The shot was blocked but Walker delivered off the rebound to give the Toros a 2-1 lead.

While the offense was placing the pressure, the Nighthawks put pressure on the Toros defense and scored the tying and winning goals in the 88th and 89th minutes.

The Toros tried to make one last push but the Nighthawks kept them in check in the end.
