Profiles in Courage - Kayley Santana (WSOC)

CARSON -- A number of former Cal State Dominguez Hills student-athletes have turned in one uniform for another, currently finding themselves in the middle of today's fight against COVID-19.

GoToros.com salutes these alums, and will recognize their heroic efforts on the front line as the pandemic continues to alter the way we go about our daily activities.

This profile in courage features Kayley Santana (nee Evans), a 4-year member of the Toros women's soccer team who currently works as a Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurse at Scripps Memorial in Encinitas after graduating from CSUDH in 2014 with a degree in Business, followed by her Master's of Science in Nursing from the University of San Francisco in 2018.

In her four years on the pitch, Kayley started 51 matches in 60 total played, tallying 3 assists and 15 shots on the backline.  Off the field, Kayley married Jio Santana, a former Toro men's soccer player who competed in 2012 and 2013, and the couple is expecting their first child in November.

Thank you, Kayley, for your commitment and dedication to serve.

How I'm helping:
"Working at Scripps as a PCU nurse, I'm working directly with patients who are COVID positive."

My motivation to help is:
"My family and my calling to help those that are in need. I went into nursing because of my desire to help others and provide some type of positive impact on their lives. I'm honored that I get to provide some type of comfort for my patients and be by their side when they are unable to have their loved ones with them."

How life has changed in 2020:
"I think with everything going on in the world, it has allowed me to really slow down and appreciate the little things."

How my participation in collegiate athletics influences me during the current pandemic:
"My participation in collegiate athletics has influenced me during this pandemic by reiterating that they only way to get through these uneasy and stressful times is by working as a team. All healthcare professionals and workers behind the scenes must work together to ensure that we are providing the most efficient, safe, and evidence-based care to our patients. I also believe that being in athletics has allowed me to be adaptable."
