Martin Makes Career-High Nine Saves in Toros Loss to Chico State

Box Score CHICO – Jada Thomas scored her first career goal to break a scoreless tie, but Chico State's women's soccer team came from behind and scored twice to edge Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1 on a hot Sunday afternoon.

Elisa Martin had a good afternoon despite the two goals allowed, making a career-high nine saves.

It was mainly a battle for possession in the first half. It wasn't until the 57th minute when the first goal arrived.

As soon as they cleared it from their own territory, the Toros (7-4-0, 4-2-0 CCAA) made a breakaway as Kallin connected to Jada Thomas and from 30 yards out she fired a grounder that missed the hands of Wildcat keeper Caitlyn Duval.

The lead did not last long as Chico State (6-6-1, 2-6-0 CCAA) answered back with a goal of its own in the 68th minute. Sarah Yang battled with Elise Sanborn in the box and her shot snuck by Elisa Martin, hit the post before knocking it into the goal.

Yang came close to finding the back of the net again in the 74th. Martin won the matchup as she got her hand high enough to send the shot over the crossbar.

The Wildcats would strike again in the 79th minute. Reigning CCAA Offensive Player of the Year got a low cross from Rene Weiler and slammed it into the back of the net to break the 1-1 tie.

Although the Toros had to play defense a good portion of the first half, the Toros put three shots on the board. The closest was Sami Feinstein in the fifth minute. She received a pass in the top of the box but her shot just missed the crossbar.

The Wildcats best chance came in the 12th minute, when Lindsey Dias took a shot from the penalty box marker only to be stopped by a diving Martin.

Chico State held a 16-12 advantage in shots total, 11-4 on goal.

The Toros road stretch continues south of Los Angeles as they visit Cal State San Marcos Friday at 12:30 p.m.
