HARRISON, N.J. -- Cal State Dominguez Hills will have an alumnus in the 2015 MLS Cup as former men's soccer player Kei Kamara and the Columbus Crew SC knocked out the New York Red Bulls 2-1 in aggregate series to win the Eastern Conference championship Sunday night.
The Crew will host the Western Conference champion Portland Timbers for the MLS Cup at MAPFRE Stadium December 6. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. PT and is televised on ESPN.
This is the second time that Columbus Crew SC has ever advanced to MLS Cup and the first time since 2008, when it defeated the New York Red Bulls at the then-Home Depot Center (now known as StubHub Center)Â to win the first major professional sports championship for the city of Columbus.
Although the Red Bulls won the second leg, 1-0, tonight, the Crew advance by virtue of its 2-0 leg one win in Columbus last week, with Kamara scoring the second goal in the 85th minute.
Kamara is having the best season in his professional career, having finished tied for first in the league with 22 goals during the regular season along with being named an MLS All-Star and Best XI, both being the first in his career.
The Kenama, Sierra Leone native is 10 years removed from being named third-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as a sophomore striker for the Toros before being taken as the ninth pick overall by the Crew in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft.
