Toros Blanked at Point Loma to Open 2014

Box Score

SAN DIEGO -- Host Point Loma used a pair of second-half goals to come away with a 2-0 decision over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills in the season opener for both teams.

Jordyn Merrill tallied two of the team's five shots, including one shot on goal in the loss.

It was all PLNU in the opening stanza as the host defense did not allow a Toro to get off a shot, while taking four themselves.

Toro keeper Briana Calderon and her defense, however, were up to the task as just one of those shots found its way towards the net, with Calderon repelling the effort.

That all changed in the second half as Sea Lion Sami Swanson took a feed from Dottie Rhoten and headed her shot past Calderon for a 1-0 lead at 52:01.

The Toro offense came alive as well as it out-shot the hosts 5-4 in the second half, but PLNU made the most out of its four chances, scoring its second goal 26 minutes later on a fast break goal.

Calderon's counterpart in Lupe Herrera made three saves after the break in the shutout win as the Toros dip to 0-1 to begin the season.

CSUDH kicks off its homestand on Saturday hosting soon-to-be CCAA member Cal State San Marcos after the Cougars were awarded D-II status earlier this year.  First kick at Toro Stadium is set for 4:30 pm.
