UC San Diego Keeps Toros Winless in 4-2 Decision

Box Score

CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills broke its scoring slump with goals by Katelyn Fregosi and Johana Rosas, but visiting UC San Diego scored three unanswered goals between the two Toro scores en route to a 4-2 non-conference victory on a cool Friday night at Toro Stadium.

The Toros remain winless at 0-5-1, while the Tritons improve to 3-2 in the non-conference match-up between southern California rivals.

After withstanding the first real scoring chance by UCSD's Izzy Pozurama, whose one-timer from 6 yards was stabbed by Toro keeper Michelle Mendez in the 35th minute, keeping the game scoreless at the half.

After the break, however, both offenses began to heat up, with the Toros finally breaking their year-long scoring drought in the 50th minute.

Fregosi did the honors, collecting a loose ball from 20 yards out and sending her bouncer over the head of Triton keeper Kelcie Brodsky, setting off a long awaited celebration on the Toro sideline.

That euphoria didn't last long, however, as the visitors got into the scoring act, netting three in a span of 14 minutes to take a 3-1 lead, the last on a beautiful header by Cassie Callahan at 71:31.

Rosas cut into CSUDH's deficit just two minutes later after blasting a right-footed screamer past a diving Brodsky to get the Toros close, but the speed of the Tritons did the Toros in nine minutes later as Aimee Ellis streaked by a pair of Toro defenders down the right side and sent a cross to a waiting Kiera Bocchino, whose headed beat Mendez for an insurance score.

UCSD outshot the Toros 16-9 on the night, with Mendez saving six shots and Brodsky three.

CSUDH will conclude its non-conference schedule on Monday as Dixie State visits Carson for a 3 pm first kick at Toro Stadium.
