Men's Hoops Inks Seven for 2014-15 Season

CARSON -- Coming off last year's disappointing 11th-place finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Cal State Dominguez Hills Men's Basketball Interim Head Coach Steve Becker is looking to improve after signing a strong recruiting class for the upcoming 2014-15 season, headlined by senior highlight reel Desi Barmore from Division II Southwest Baptist University, junior Shaq Hunter from Irvine Valley College and redshirt freshman Josh Brown from University of Texas at El Paso.

"We're extremely pleased to announce this year's recruiting class," Becker begins.  "Our staff worked diligently to bring aboard student-athletes who understand the qualities and character necessary to be a Toro.

"We are motivated to get Dominguez Hills basketball back to being highly competitive in the CCAA Conference and battling for league titles."

A long 6'7 forward, Barmore averaged 16.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks a game for the Bearcats, who compete in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), with his PPG average good for 13th in the MIAA Conference and his RPG average good for 9th.  He led SBU in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage en route to an All-MIAA Honorable Mention nod.

"Desi is a critical piece in finalizing our recruiting class," gushes Becker.  "Desi is a highlight reel waiting to happen with his elite athleticism and length, and has proven himself at a high level.  Additionally, Desi's versatility will allow him to affect the game on many levels, and Toro fans will really enjoy watching Desi play this year."

A 6'2 shooting guard, Hunter earned 1st-team all-league honors after leading his Irvine Valley College squad to a 25-5 record while averaging 15.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, shooting 37.8% from down town and 86.2% from the foul line.

"Shaq is a winner and played two years for a good friend and legendary coach at Irvine Valley College in Jerry Hernandez," begins Becker.  "Shaq is an explosive athlete who can really defend the basketball and will add a three-point threat to our wing position, athleticism as well as a winning mentality. He is a key piece in our recruiting class, and I am excited to get to work with him."

A point guard, Josh Brown will have all four years to compete for the Toros after redshirting at UTEP.  As a senior at Cathedral High School, Brown earned 1st-team All-CIF, a pair of 1st-team all-league selections and a McDonald's All-American nominee after averaging 18.9 points, 9.2 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game.  A prolific scorer, Brown tallied 40 points in a 96-93 win over High Desert Prep en route to CHS reaching the Elite Eight of the CIF playoffs.

"We are thrilled to welcome Josh to the Toro family," says Becker.  "Josh comes from a great family and has been very well coached at Cathedral under William Middlebrooks. Josh is a quality young man and I expect him to have a tremendous four-year career as a Toro. I am excited to get to work with him and see him mature in the classroom as well as on the court."

A graduate student with a year of eligibility left, 6'5 forward Chris Collins joins the Toros after three years at Division I Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 3.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists a game in over 14 minutes of action per contest for the Titans.  An honor roll member, he appeared in 28 games with four starts for the Titans.

"Chris is an explosive, athletic wing who can play multiple positions for us," says Becker.  "He will add depth to our frontcourt and he will be able to guard multiple positions, as well as adding experience to our roster while working towards his master's degree."

A sharp shooter, 6'2 David Gonzalez from Cypress College lit up the Orange Empire Conference after being named a 1st-team all-league selection.  With his 21.4 point per game average and 47.7% efficiency from behind the 3-point line, Gonzalez topped the 30-point plateau on four occasions, and scored 50 points against Grossmont College to set the Cypress College single-game scoring record.

"David is an elite shooter who demonstrated tremendous consistency scoring the basketball this year for Cypress College," says Becker.  "We look forward to helping David develop in the classroom as well as on the court."

At 6-3, Darius Butler averaged 14.8 points and 4.3 rebounds a game while shooting at a 35.0% clip from downtown at Blue Mountain Community College in Oregon, and will provide a "strong body" and "tremendous work ethic in both the classroom and on the court," says Becker.

A transfer from Chadron State where he redshirted in 2013-14, junior 6-1 guard Mike Hill averaged 15 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists per game as a sophomore at Modesto JC, and "possesses a high basketball IQ and can really shoot the basketball," begins Becker.  "Mike's work ethic has been impressive thus far both in the classroom and on the floor, and we are excited to welcome him and his family to Carson."

Butler and Gonzalez both signed National Letters of Intent while Barmore, Brown, Collins, Hill and Hunter all accepted written offers of financial aid.
