No. 5 Seed Toros Hold Off No. 4 Seed Alaska Anchorage to Advance in NCAA West Regional

Will face No. 1 seed and host Cal State East Bay in Saturday semifinal

HAYWARD, Calif. -- One day after being named a 1st-team D2CCA 1st-team All-West Region selection, Jalen Brown posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds to help lead No. 5 seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 69-58 upset win over No. 4 seeded Alaska Anchorage in an NCAA West Region quarterfinal match-up.

The Toros will face No. 1 seed Cal State East Bay tomorrow night at 7:30 pm after the Pioneers pulled away from No. 8 seed Cal Poly Humboldt in the second half of tonight's final quarterfinal match-up in an 83-64 win, CSUEB's 31st of the year.

Watch the post-game interview with head coach Steve Becker, son Dom, Dasean Stevens and Luke Lin.

CSUDH shot a respectable 40.4% from the field in the quarterfinal, but held Alaska Anchorage to just 31.1%, well below their 44% average for the season.  A big advantage came at the charity stripe where all five players who attempted foul shots shot over 66.7%, collectively converting on 71% (22-31) of their attempts while AAU made just 60% of its free throw attempts (12-20).

The Toros also claimed the rebounding edge (43-to-39), leading to an impressive 32-to-18 advantage in points in the paint.

After building as much as a 10-point lead twice in the first half and never trailing, the Toros saw their lead cut to 33-30 after the first 20 minutes of play, but pushed their advantage to 41-30 at the 16:20 mark in a layup by Lin.

Alaska answered with a 10-0 run to get to within one, and took its first lead of the game at 45-43 at the 10:39 mark.

The Nanooks held onto its lead until Josiah Sanders connected on a triple at 5:53 to tie the score at 50-50.

That's when the Toro defense intensified, causing three Alaska turnovers and misses over the final five minutes, conversely hitting 11 of 14 free throws down the stretch to pull away for the win.

Stevens led the balanced Toro attack with 16 points while Lin added 15 and Sanders 13 to go with Brown's dozen.

Lin and Brown added three steals apiece while five Toros finished with at least five rebounds (Sanders 8, David Cheatom 8, Lin 6, Stevens 5).

Tomorrow's NCAA West Region semifinal will be the third meeting between the top two teams in the CCAA.

The Pioneers swept the regular season series from the Toros and are the lone team in all of NCAA Division 2 men's basketball to remain undefeated.  CSUEB took an 89-82 win in Carson on December 19 before a 79-57 decision on February 7 in Pioneer Gymnasium.
