Baseball Takes Opener Against NNU in 3-2 Decision in Twinbill Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARSON -- Senior Nick Wagner escaped a 2-on, 1-out top of the ninth by fanning the final two batters he faced to preserve a 3-2 win over visiting Northwest Nazarene after Tyler Mark (pictured) tossed a solid 6.1 innings in earning a no-decision in the opening game of today's twinbill.

NNU, however, came away with its first win of the year in the nightcap in a 7-3 decision, bolstered by a 5-run 5th-inning.

The opener began at a brisk pace as Mark held NNU scoreless over six innings while NNU starter Jake Reppert allowed single runs in the 2nd and 3rd, with Taylor Kahanowitch knocking home Jordan Yallen in the 2nd and the second run coming home on an NNU error.

NNU tied the game in the 7th inning with two runs, before CSUDH took the lead for good in its 7th inning at-bat on a David Steininger RBI baseknock.

The Crusaders looked to rally in the top of the 9th off Wagner after a leadoff walk and single one batter put runners on first and second with one out, but Wagner settled down to fan the final two batters he faced, securing the team's win and his first save of the season.

Here's a look at Wagner closing the opener:

Eight Toros earned a hit in the game as Brennan Bernardino picked up the win after an inning of work.

The nightcap saw NNU take an early lead in the 3rd, and put the game away with a 5-run 5th for a 6-0 lead off starter Josephf Perez and a number of Toros out of the pen, adding another run one inning later before CSUDH mounted a rally.

The Toros got one run back on Bubby Rossman's monster shot to right center, before a pair of runs in the 7th on an Adrian Guzman RBI single and a Daniel Matienzo sacrifice fly, but NNU starter Aaron Vaughn finished what he started in the complete game win.

NNU rapped 13 hits to pick up its first win of the year.

The two teams conclude their four-game set tomorrow morning, for a single game starting at 11 am on Toro Field.
