Defensive Struggle Results in 1-0 Win For No. 20 UC San Diego

Box Score

CARSON -- A foul in the box was all the offense either side could must in a defensive struggle between No. 20 UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills on a cool Friday afternoon on the Toro Stadium pitch, and the result was a Cassie Callahan penalty kick that accounted for the lone score in UCSD's hard-fought 1-0 win over the Toros.

With the loss, CSUDH falls to 1-2, 0-1 CCAA as Melanie DeSalvo led the Toros with 5 shots, including 2 on goal.

The game was scoreless for the first 45 minutes of play as CSUDH enjoyed an 8-4 shot advantage over the reigning NCAA Runner-Up Tritons.

That all changed in the second half, however, as UCSD turned it up a notch, culminating with a push that resulted in a foul in the Toro box.

Senior Callahan took advantage of her opportunity, sending a bender to the right of Toro keeper Jennifer Ackerly for what would prove to be the only score of the night in the 61st minute.

UCSD controlled the second-half action the remainder of the half en route to picking up the win in the CCAA opener for both teams.

Ackerly finished with two saves while counterpart Kelcie Brodsky made seven.

CSUDH looks to end its two-game skid on Sunday as Cal Poly Pomona visits Toro Stadium for an 11:30 am first kick.
