Golden Eagles Spoil Senior Day in Offensive 4-3 Decision

Box Score

CARSON -- Cross-town rival Cal State L.A. scored three unanswered goals in a span of 16 minutes during the first half, and that pushed the Golden Eagles to a 4-3 win over host Cal State Dominguez Hills on a perfect Sunday afternoon, spoiling the Toros' Senior Day.

With the loss, CSUDH falls to 5-7-2, 4-6-2 CCAA, while CSULA improves to 7-4-3, 5-4-3 CCAA.

The Toros started the scoring early after Olivia Patterson fed Sami Feinstein at the top of the 18, with Feinstein heading CSULA keeper Yi Du for a 1-0 lead at the 13:33 mark.

CSULA, however, answered with scores at the 21:37, 25:57 and 37:41 marks to take a 3-1 lead, with Shereen Khoobbagha's score closing the first half scoring.

After the half, Melanie DeSalvo was awarded a penalty kick after the visitors were called for a hand ball inside the box, and DeSalvo made them pay after converting her attempt at 47:19.

That momentum was short-lived, however, as CSULA answered just 56 seconds later with a Veronika Steen shot from outside the box that hit the top post and went past Toro keeper Jennifer Ackerly for a 4-2 CSULA lead.

Patterson answered herself with an unassisted shot from outside the 18 yard box that nestled into the top corner to cut the lead to one, but the CSULA defense held firm the rest of the way in the 4-3 win.

Each team took 15 shots with CSULA enjoying an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.

Acklery ended with 3 saves with Yi earning one.

Before the game, the Toros honored seven seniors who played their final game in Toro Stadium in Natalie Barbosa, Briana Behrad, Melanie DeSalvo, Kayley Evans, Patterson, Caitlin Peterson and Brenda Rodriguez.

The Toros will head to Chico State next Friday to take on the Wildcats, with first kick set for 7:00 pm in Chico.
