Toros Lose Lead Late in 1-1 2OT Draw at Cal Baptist

Box Score
RIVERSIDE -- Defending Pacific West Conference Champion and NCCAA National Champion California Baptist University started its 2012 campaign Saturday, getting a 1-1 draw with Cal State Dominguez Hills on a hot afternoon in Riverside.

The tie puts the Lancers at 0-0-1, while the Toros, who defeated Azusa Pacific 2-1 in overtime Thursday night, are now 1-0-1.

"I thought we did pretty good and the girls worked hard," said CBU Head Coach Kristen St. Clair.  "It's encouraging when they come out and play this well on the first day of the season. I'm excited for the progress."

It took CBU the first 45 minutes to find its footing. The Toros outshot the Lancers 8-5 in the first half and broke through in the 21st minute on a goal from Claudia Toledo, who took an over-the-top ball from Kayley Evans and sent her shot far post for a 1-0 lead at the 20:02 mark.

The second half, though, was a different story as the Lancers began to find their rhythm.  Then, in the 64th minute, Bernadette Witz equalized after Chantel Cappuccilli played a ball from the left side right into the middle where Witz took a touch, turned and hammered home the Lancers' first goal of the year into the right corner.

Neither team was able to score again in the fnal 25 minutes and the game headed to overtime. Both teams fired off three shots each in the extra time.  None of them were golden.

"We weren't sharp in the first half, but the players did a good job of making a few adjustments and our consistency and execution was better," said St. Clair.

The Toros kick off league play next weekend on the road, traveling to Cal State Stanislaus for a 7 pm first kick.
