Toledo Golden in 2OT Win Over Azusa Pacific to Open 2012

Box Score
CARSON -- Junior transfer Claudia Toledo made quite a first appearance in her Toro debut with a pair of goals that included the golden goal in the second overtime to lift Cal State Dominguez Hills to a thrilling 2-1 win over visiting Azusa Pacific on a warm Thursday night in Toro Stadium.

With the win, CSUDH moves to 1-0 on the year, while APU drops to 0-1.

It looked to be a defensive battle from the onset before APU's Natalie Sun provide the game's first score in the 30th minute, collecting a loose ball that evaded Toro keeper Tiffany Hollis, and blasting her shot into an empty net for a 1-0 lead.

That's where the score remained until late in regulation as Toledo took a rebound off a Niki Poole blast and sent her shot past sprawling Cougar keeper Michelle Wieland at 85:06.

Toledo had a chance to win in the first overtime after a rocket from 35 seemed heading for the upper post.  Wieland, however, stretched out her 5-8 frame and tipped the ball onto and off the crossbar to keep the game knotted.

That didn't stop Toledo's aggressiveness however, as the Long Beach native sent a 25 footer through a sea of bodies and to the right of a diving Wieland at 105:52 for the game-winner to end the season-opener for both teams in dramatic fashion.

Hollis finished with 5 saves in the win compared to 3 for Wieland, with two of Toledo's three shots finding the back of the net.

The Toros conclude their non-conference season on Saturday, September 1, with a trip to Cal Baptist.
