WALNUT CREEK -- Cal State Dominguez Hills was tabbed to finish fourth of six teams in the California Collegiate Athletic Association's South Division, with perennial power UC San Diego and upstart Cal State Stanislaus being selected to win their respective divisions following a poll of the league head coaches.
The Tritons are also tabbed to claim the CCAA title after receiving four of the coaches' votes. Four other institutions received votes for the title including Cal State L.A with three votes, followed by Sonoma State and defending CCAA conference champion Cal State Stanislaus with two votes apiece. Reigning west region champion Chico State garnered a single vote as well.
Cal State Stanislaus, with 53 points and five first-place votes, is picked to capture the division title in the North for the upcoming 2012 campaign. Sonoma State, which received three first-place votes, garnered 51 points to finish second in the voting and, although Chico State gathered more first-place votes (4) than the Seawolves, the Wildcats are projected to finish third with 49 points. Wrapping up the north rankings are Humboldt State (22), Cal State Monterey Bay (21) and Cal State East Bay (20).
UC San Diego battled Cal State L.A. in the poll, but the Tritons held as the favorite for the South Division title with 55 points and seven first-place votes. The Golden Eagles came in at second with 51 points while receiving four first-place votes. Cal State San Bernardino, which tallied 36 points and earned a first-place vote, finished third, followed by Cal State Dominguez Hills (35), Cal Poly Pomona (24) and San Francisco State (15).
Seven teams received at least one vote in balloting for predicting CCAA tournament participants, led by 10 votes given to UC San Diego. The coaches' pick to join the Tritons in the conference's annual postseason tournament were Cal State Stanislaus (9), Cal State L.A. (9), Sonoma State (8), Chico State (6), Cal State San Bernardino (3) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (3).
The 2012 CCAA Championship Tournament will be hosted on the campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills and is scheduled for Nov. 2-4.
Four CCAA teams begin the 2012 campaign ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Top 25 Preseason Poll. Chico State opens the season ranked No. 4, Cal State L.A. is ranked No. 13, UC San Diego is ranked No. 18 and Cal State Stanislaus is No. 25.
The 2012 schedule gets underway on Thurs., Aug. 30 as eight conference teams are in action. CCAA play opens Fri., Sept. 7, with all 12 teams in action.
