Cross Country Season Wraps Up With Great Showing at NCAA Regionals

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Racing for the first time out of the state of California and facing all of the top teams in the NCAA West Region, the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros women's cross country team fared well at the 2011 NCAA D-II Cross Country west regional held at the Plantes Ferry Athletic Complex, finishing less than a minute out of the top 20.  Senior leader Astyne Price wrapped up her last season in Cardinal and Gold by breaking the 24-minute mark yet again on the 6k course while finishing as the top CSUDH runner.

Price finished 74th overall out of the nearly 200 runners in a time of 23:42, making her senior campaign one of the most successful in Toros history.  She crossed the line first among the Toro runner in nearly every race during the season and filled in nicely after last year's top runner Brigette Fernandez was not able to compete at the highest level this season.

Finishing just two spots and four seconds behind Price was arguably CSUDH's most improved runner, senior Reyna Samaniego.  The Toros #2 runner crossed the line in 76th place in a time of 23:46 breaking the 24-minute mark for the second competition in a row.  This finished a very successful season for Samaniego which saw her times drop and her place on the team rise after a very solid first season in Cardinal & Gold.

Senior Rebecca Caracoza and freshman Julia Wilson finished strong in third and fourth places, respectively, for the Toros.  Caracoza was just nine seconds short of breaking the 25 minute mark, crossing in a time of 25:09 and in 134th place.  First-year CSUDH runner Wilson finished just four places and seconds back in 138th and a time of 25:13.

The final two CSUDH runners were senior Lidia Ferman and freshman Gloria Flores crossing the line fifth and sixth, respectively.  Senior Ferman was 151st in a time of 25:45 while freshman Flores was 160th in a time of 26:53.

As a team Cal State Dominguez Hills came home in 22nd place less than a minute in total time away from a top 20 finish.

A few members of the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros women's cross country team look to remain competitive during the track and field season, which will bode well for next year's campaign.
