Toros Baseball, Cross Country and Cheer Show Thanks to the Carson Community

CARSON -- Members of the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball, cross country and cheer teams all volunteered time and energy from their busy schedules to lend a hand at the 8th Annual Mayor Jim Dear Turkey Give-A-Way last Saturday, an annual event that provides turkeys to Carson residents, and depends on the CSUDH Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for support.

"It's much appreciated and they're really caring and compassionate individuals," begins Dear, about the student-athletes and cheer members.  "CSUDH is a part of the community and the community is part of the school is the way we look at it, so this relationship has been a great part of the fabric of our community, and we thank them."

Nearly 30 baseball players, led by SAAC Vice President Danny Haley, were joined by three members of Cheer as well as cross country SAAC member Rachel Warschaw for the two-hour event, host by Dear and his fellow council members Elito M. Santarina and Mike A. Gipson.

"We're honored to give back to a community that supports our entire program and comes out to games, and passing out turkeys is just a small way we can make sure everybody has a happy Thanksgiving," says Haley.  "On a personal note, it's kind of moving, handing a turkey to someone who is less fortunate than others, and it's truly a blessing that I can help them on a day of thanks."

The Turkey Give-A-Way is the first of three annual events SAAC takes part in for the holidays season, with the Harbor/UCLA visit set for Monday and Tuesday, December 5 and 6, and the LA Food Bank scheduled for Friday, December 9.
