Toros Celebrate 20th Anniversary of Women's Soccer's 1991 NCAA Title

Members from the 1991 NCAA Champion women's soccer team with head coach Marine Cano and trainer Wilda Bingham
CARSON -- On November 17, 1991, the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team defeated Sonoma State, 2-1, to give the Toros their first NCAA National Championship Title as freshman Staci Blough knocked in the game-winner at the 84:43 mark to seal the come-from-behind win over the top-ranked team in the nation.

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of that history-making game, the 1991 women's soccer team, head coach Marine Cano and members of the CSUDH Athletics Staff were honored on October 22 in a ceremony at the Home Depot Center prior to a Chivas USA game.

After current Cal State Dominguez Hills Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen welcomed the guests of honor and their families, current UCLA Director of Athletics and former CSUDH AD Dan Guerrero took to the podium and reflected on the team's journey and this NCAA title being his first in a long line of NCAA team titles.

Guerrero's anecdote also included a post-Mercyhurst quarterfinal victory phone call that ensured the Final Four would take place in Carson, the single-most important phone call of the soccer season as the Toros were awarded hosting duties and defeated Barry in the semis before making history.

Cano then took over the ceremony, waxing nostalgia to those in attendance and recalling specifics from the match against Division I UC Santa Barbara and the NCAA postseason among others to raucous laughter, before a brief slide show brought back visual memories from the 1991 team's shining moment.

The players in attendance, Amy (Rubin) Disimone, Anna Rubin, Briana O'Dowd, Dena (Telfair) Parisi, Gloria (Zupancich) Blackburn, Jennifer (Womack) Michelson, Joanna (Enserro) Burgess and Monica (Lastrapes) Smith, along with trainer Wilda Bingham were then called up to the podium where each received a commemorative soccer ball as a token of CSUDH's appreciation.

The next morning, Womack, Enserro and Zupancich joined the current women's soccer team for the commemorative coin toss before "Senior Day," with the Rubin sisters later joining the three alums in the stands for the contest, a history-making event in which senior All-American Jessica Murphy scored 5 goals to tie both the CCAA and CSUDH records for goals in a single match.
