Toros Hold Off Bulldogs, 65-60, to Remain Perfect in 2010-11

Box Score
PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Coming off its second dominating performance over a ranked team to begin the GCU Tip-Off Classic yesterday, the Toros experienced their first nail-biter of the season against a game Minnesota-Duluth squad on day two of the tournament, but the result remained the same after a 65-60 victory kept CSUDH unbeaten in its first three games of the season.  Michael Cox and Marcquintice Davis (pictured) paced the victors with 14 points apiece.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead at the 19:21 mark, the first time in 80:39 the Toros hadn't enjoyed the view from the top this season, before a Cox lay-up knotted the score at 11 all at the 14:27 mark.

The two teams tied again on four more occasions during the first 20-minute session before a Davis bucket at 1:25 gave CSUDH the lead for good as the Toros entered the locker room up 29-27.

An inspired halftime pep talk seemed to wake the Toros up as a 14-6 run to begin the second half gave CSUDH its first double-figure lead of 43-32 at the 15:04 mark, swelling as large as 17 at 49-32 on a Van Girard II put-back at 11:47.

UMD, however, ran off its own run of 17-3 in getting to within 52-49 four minutes later, until a Robert Willhite jumper delayed the Bulldog rally to give CSUDH breathing room with a 5-point lead.

Despite missing 11 of 25 free throws on the day, CSUDH was clutch down the stretch as Cox, Davis and Willhite combined to hit seven of their final 10 attempts to seal the 65-60 win.

Tim McLaurin chipped in with 12 points as the Toros were held to just 43.4% shooting from the field, but a cold Bulldog team hit on just 37% of their shots, including just 8-of-23 from long range.

UMD's Riley Walker led all players with 18 points and 11 boards, while Amir Aguilar pulled down 10 boards to lead the Toros.

CSUDH, now 3-0, hosts Vanguard University to complete its non-conference schedule on Wednesday, November 24, before cross-town rival Cal State L.A. visits the "Dave Yanai Court" on Saturday, November 27, for a post-Thanksgiving showdown.  Both games will be nationally televised via internet TV on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/Live.
