Carson, CA -- Host Cal State San Bernardino held CCAA leader Cal State Dominguez Hills to just 39.2 percent shooting from the field in a 66-51 win, moving both schools into a four-way tie atop the CCAA with Humboldt State and UC San Diego with identical 8-3 CCAA Conference marks. Reigning CCAA Player of the Week Jerrell Smith led CSUDH with 13 points in the loss.
Both teams were up to the challenge early, with neither squad holding more than a 4-point lead until just minutes left in the first half. Down 18-15 at the 5:12 mark, the Toros held the Coyotes scoreless for nearly three minutes, but were unable to take advantage of the offensive laps by misfiring once, committing three turnovers and two fouls over that same stretch, allowing CSUSB to take a 5-point lead at 20-15 on a DeBois Williams slam.
The hosts used that rim-rattler to kick start its offense as a Devin Montgomery triple, another by Lawrence Tyson and a Montgomery foul shoot over the next minute and a half increased CSUSB's lead to 27-15 before the Toros gained one back via a free throw to head into the locker room down 27-16.
Foul shots by Smith and Tim McGrath started the Toros on their way after the break, eventually outscoring the Yotes 12-3 to open the session. Down just two at 30-28 after a McGrath layup, CSUSB answered with a 10-2 run of its own to post a 40-30 edge at the 13:05 mark, before hovering around double-digits the rest of half half, increasing to its largest lead of the night at 62-43 with just under five minutes left in regulation.
CSUDH had one last gasp in it after scoring 6-consecutive points, but it was too little to late as the Coyotes pulled themselves into a four-way tie atop the CCAA with the 15-point win.
McGrath chipped in 10 points while Rodney Yearby, Jamel Ward and Michael Hernandez tallied 7 points apiece in the loss. Normally positive in the rebound stat, CSUDH lost the battle on the glass, giving up 7 more boards in the defeat. Uncharacteristically, the Toros went scoreless from behind the arc, missing all 10 attempts.
The Toros, now 14-4, 8-3 CCAA, look to rebound tomorrow night at Cal Poly Pomona, with first tip set for 7:30 pm.
