Toros Drop Second-Consecutive in 3-2 Loss at No. 25 UC San Diego

Box Score
La Jolla, CA -- Senior Yvonne Vasquez (pictured) and sophomore MaKenzie Pedrotti found the back of the net, but 25th-ranked UC San Diego scored three goals in the second half, including a penalty kick variety in the 71st minute to take a 3-2 win this afternoon.  The Toros fall to 3-5, 1-2 CCAA.

Vasquez started the scoring at the 30:45 mark, working the ball up the right side and lifting her shot to the upper left corner of the net for a 1-0 Toro lead.  That edge lasted all of 20 minutes as Triton Remy Hitt equalized in the 52nd minute after taking a feed from Alexia Zatarain and blasting it by Toro keeper Alyssa Congdon for UCSD's first goal.

The Tritons gained their first lead of the night just eight minutes later after Natasha Belak-Berger took a 50-50 ball away from Congdon and slotted her shot past CSUDH's defenders for a 2-1 lead.

Pedrotti, however, tied the game just 4 minutes later as her long-range attempt somehow found its way past UCSD keeper Jessica McGovern at 64:24.

CSUDH's momentum was short-lived, however, as Belak-Berger notched her second goal of the game at 71:52 on a penalty kick after the Toros were called for a hand ball in their defensive zone, sending the Tritons home with the win.

Both Congdon and McGovern made 3 saves apiece with UCSD gaining a 16-14 edge in shots, but surrendering a 7-4 tally in corners.

The Toros look to get back on the winning track this Sunday, September 21, as they travel to cross-town rival Cal State L.A. for a 2:00 pm first kick.
