Carson, CA -- Freshman sensation Jessica Murphy scored her team-best ninth goal of the season, but visiting Cal State L.A. received an unassisted goal late in the game to come away with a 2-1 victory over the Toros on Friday night. With the loss, CSUDH's second-consecutive 2-1 defeat in a span of three days, the Toros fall to 10-7, 8-4 CCAA.
The two teams played close from the outset as CSUDH managed just one more shot attempt than Cal State L.A. That discrepancy paid dividends at the 12:19 mark when Karina Jahn slipped a cross to Murphy at the top of the Golden Eagle box, where she directed her blast past CSULA keeper Heather Emswiler for a 1-0 lead.
That lead lasted all of 16 minutes when Golden Eagle Sarah Le took a free kick from Liz Franco, and headed the ball to a waiting Christine Duff, who tapped in the sitter past CSUDH keeper Alyssa Congdon to tie the game at 1-1.
Ones remained on the board until the 74th minute with CSULA's Gabbi Segall dribbled into the CSUDH box from the left side and drew Congdon out of position, enabling Segall to connect with the eventual game-winner.
Although the Toros mustered an 11-6 shot advantage in the second half, Emswiler was up to the challenge in saving 5 of her 7 shots after the break, while Congdon countered with 4, including 3 in the second half.
Cal State Dominguez Hills looks to stop its two-game skid on Wednesday against Cal State San Marcos as it honors five seniors in a pre-game ceremony before the scheduled 4:30 pm first kick.
