TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills offense erupted in game one of today's doubleheader at Stan State, scoring 27 runs on 30 hits en route to a 27-16 romp over the Warriors. The hosts, however, limited the Toro offense in game two, salvaging a split with a 4-3 walk-off win.
The Toros move to 18-22 overall and 10-17 in the CCAA.
CSUDH took a 15-0 lead after four at-bats, using five extra base hits and a towering 3-run blast by
Quinn Johnson to open the day's scoring. With the Toros leading 16-5 after five innings of play, CSUDH's bats again came alive by scoring nine runs over the sixth and seventh innings, highlighted by
Angel Cortez's grand slam, three RBI singles and a bases-loaded walk to bring the Toro lead to 25-6.
Stan State closed the gap with nine runs of their own over the seventh and eighth innings to make it 25-15, with both teams scoring in the ninth for the final tally.
Leadoff hitterÂ
Deegan Grgas (pictured) paced the Cardinal and Gold with five hits and four RBI in the opener, with Cortez driving in five runs and adding three hits of his own.
Tristan Usher and
Dominik Cervantes both pounded four hits, with
Alex Sepulveda, Ragland and Julio Camerana tallying three hits piece. Grgas and Johnson drove home four runs each, with four other Toros bringing home two in the rout.
Reliever
Trysten Eddy picked up his first win of the year (1-1), allowing just one hit while facing eight batters.
The nightcap began as the opener ended with the Toros getting on the board first. Stan State, however, took its first lead of the day with a pair in the first and one in the sixth for a 3-1 lead and looked primed to take the nightcap after retiring the first Toro in the top of the seventh inning. Grgas, however, drew a walk to give CSUDH hope, and
Nigel Buckley delivered with a 2-run blast to left center on the first pitch he saw to tie the game at 3-3.
The Toros returned the free pass to the Warriors to lead off the bottom half of the seventh, and put that runner in scoring position with another walk one batter later. That proved costly as the Warriors walked it off with an RBI single from the next batter to take the game, 4-3.
Buckley earned two of CSUDH's six hits in the nightcap, with
River Diaz De Leon suffering the loss.
The two teams conclude the series on Sunday, with first pitch set for 12 noon.
