STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's golf team remained in fifth place as the California Collegiate Athletic Association men's golf tournament came to a close this afternoon, missing a fourth-place finish by just five strokes.
Individually,
Aaron Sanchez moved up four spots to finish tied for 11th place overall, just one of six golfers overall to shoot under par in round 3.
No. 26 Chico State bested No. 31 Cal State San Bernardino in a playoff for the team title after the two squads finished tied for first, with both squads shooting 4 over par. Cal State San Marcos followed at 6-over, with No. 30 Cal State East Bay at +17, five shots ahead of the Toros.
Sanchez shaved four strokes from yesterdays 75 to end the tournament with a 219 overall (73-75-71). The junior was on fire to start the round, enjoying birdies on the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th holes to put him at 4-under par. The back nine, however, saw the La Habra native open with a bogey on 11 and double bogey on 13, only to earn back two strokes with birdies on 14 and 16. Hole 17, however, proved problematic as another double bogey brought him to 3-over on the back nine, finishing with a 1-under 71.
Sam Song, who sat tied for fifth entering today's final round, dropped nine spots to 14th after a 5-over third round to finish at 221 (68-76-77), with
Trent Fitzgerald falling four spots to No. 24 (76-74-76-225),
Zachary Iwashita finishing tied for 27th (73--80-74-227), and
Troy Song ending tied for 29th (76-74-68-228).
The Toros will learn their fate for the NCAA Super Regional on Saturday. Stay tuned to GoToros.com for all updates.
