ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Despite finishing in 17th place of 18 teams competing at the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, the Cal State Dominguez Hills golf team improved across the board as the second and final day of the Cal State East Bay-hosted tournament came to a close.
From yesterday morning's opening round of 12-over, the Toros shaved four strokes off their round 2 score to conclude yesterday, and again bettered today's round by five strokes to finish 23-over for the tournament, just three shots behind Northwest Nazarene and eight shots from 15th place Stanislaus State.
In team competition, the host Pioneers, ranked No. 19, took home the team title with a -15 overall, three strokes better than No 37 Colorado Christian and five shots better than No. 43 CS San Bernardino.
Individually, freshman
Troy Song continue his hot shooting, concluding with a 2-under after going from a 3-over to 3-under in his two rounds, to finish tied for 17th with a 214 (75-69-70), moving up 13 places in the standings.
Zacharay Iwashita followed his teammate's lead, moving up 15 spots to finish tied for 48th after finishing even today to give him a total score of 221 (74-75-72).
Sam Song also showed improvement in moving up 10 spots to tie for 78th, cutting four strokes off his first-round score to finish at 226 (77-76-73), as did
Ethan Hong, who moved up two spots to tie for 86th (77-76-76-229).
Mahamed Ibrahim rounded out the quintet by lowering his score from 11-over in the second round to a 7-over today, finishing 102nd (74-83-79-236).
The Toros next compete at the Coyote Classic, beginning March 23 at the Oak Valley Golf Club.
