Box Score CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills duo of
Anela Thomas (pictured) and
Bryanne Lopez-Wood combined for 26 points while the Toro defense shut down visiting Cal State Monterey Bay's 3-point shooting as CSUDH ran its win streak to six-straight games after a 65-56 win over the Otters this afternoon in the Torodome.
CSUDH continues to sit in fifth place in the CCAA standings as it looks to qualify for one of six berths in the league postseason tournament with four games left in the regular seasons.
The Toros shot 40% from the floor compared to 46.7% for the Otters, but it was a marked improvement at the free throw line that paid huge dividends for the hosts as they converted 87% of their attempts, the best conversion rate of the year.
Although CSUDH was out-rebounded 30-29, the Toros enjoyed three more boards on the offensive end, leading to a 10 to 1 edge in second chance points.
CSUDH's bench also contributed 26 points compared to just eight for the Otters.
After tying at 13-13 after the first quarter, the Toros outscored the visitors 14-9 in the second to take a 27-22 lead.
CSUMB cut into CSUDH's lead by outscoring the Toros 16-14 after the third quarter, but the Toros answered with a huge fourth quarter to put an exclamation point on the win.
In that final period, a Lopez-Wood layup with 3:33 left in regulation gave the Toros their largest lead of the contest.
Monterey Bay got to within 55-51 with just over two minutes left in regulation, but five-consecutive Thomas free throws over the next 1:01 again pushed CSUDH's lead to nine at 60-51, with free throws by Lopez-Wood, Leiland Abraham and
Zanna Hurst providing the final margin of victory.
Camryn Washington poured in 10 to add to her stellar weekend, while Thomas added a team-best five boards.
CSUDH makes its final road trip of the year next week, beginning with a trip to Stanislaus State on February 19, for a 5:30 pm tip.
