CARSON -- Inspired by a pregame ceremony in which Cal State Dominguez Hills celebrated last year's historic run with a ring and banner unveiling ceremony, the Toros boasted five players in double-figure scoring in leading wire-to-wire en route to a 78-66 win over visiting San Francisco State.
The Toros, who connected for 55.6% of their field goal attempts, improve to 2-7 on the year and 2-2 in CCAA play, while the Gators fall to 2-8 overall, and 0-4 in league action.
Four quick points to start the contest by
Anela Thomas and
Tiara Jones set the tone for the hosts this afternoon as the Toro lead grew to 17-11 on an
Amaya Washington triple at the 3:53 mark in the first quarter, with CSUDH settling for a 26-21 lead after one.
The second quarter saw the visitors get to within 31-30 halfway through the second frame, until a
Kylee Edgar jumper, another Thomas layup and two Thomas free throws gave the Toros a comfortable 37-30 edge with just under four minutes left until the half.
Two Edgar free throws and a triple by
A'moree Ferrel in the closing seconds pushed CSUDH's lead to 12 at 47-35, a lead the Toros would look to increase after the break.
SFSU had other ideas to begin the third quarter, however, as the Gators outscored the Toros 9-3 to whittle their deficit to 50-44 six minutes into the frame, only to have CSUDH answer with a 10-3 run of its own to take a 60-47 lead into the final quarter, the final two points coming on a pair of Ferrel freebies.
The Gators made one final charge as they cut CSUDH's lead to just six at 62-56 three minutes into the frame, but a
Jayla Love layup and Edgar jumper again brought the Toro lead to double-figures with 3:31 left in regulation.
That's where the lead hovered the rest of the way as the hosts came away with the eventual 78-66 victory.
Jones led all scorers with 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting, with Edgar chipping in 12 and
Bryanne Lopez-Wood, Thomas and Ferrel adding 10 in the win.
CSUDH dominated inside the paint with a 44-24 advantage, and enjoyed a 35-15 edge in points from the bench and six blocks compared to just one by SFSU.
Former members of the 2024-25 team attended the pregame ceremony including head coach John Bonner and
Nala Williams, who saw her own banner unveiled in honor of being named the NCAA National Player of the Year in leading the Toros to the best record in program history and a national runner-up finish.
The Toros take to the road after ringing in the new calendar year, traveling to Cal Poly Humboldt on Friday, January 2, for a 5:30 pm tip.
