Toros Fall Short in Two Matches on the Road

GRAND JUNCTION, CO- Cal State Dominguez Hills faced tough competition on Saturday at the Maverick Fall Classic, falling to Angelo State in straight sets 3-0 (25-21-, 25-23, 25-21) in the morning and later dropping a second match to Colorado Mesa 3-0 (24-26, 20-25, 13-25).

GAME ONE vs Angelo State

Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped a tightly contested match to Angelo State, falling in straight sets 0-3 (21-25-, 23-25, 21-25) on Saturday morning at the Maverick Fall Classic.

The Toros battled throughout each set, but Angelo State would outlast them, taking advantage of key moments to secure the sweep. Despite the loss, the Toros showed resilience, pushing the second set to the brink before falling 25-23.

The Toros fought to stay close in the first and third sets, keeping the score within striking distance, but Angelo State managed to close out each set with consistent play down the stretch.

Outside Ava Hurry led the Toros with 11 kills and also contributed 11 digs and an ace, while Setter Maria Bejines-Garibay added 10 kills, 8 digs, and 1 ace.  And Freshman opposite hitter hipped in with 6 kills for the offense.

Setter Bailey Fuches recorded a double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs, while Maya Barron matched Fuches with 18 assists of her own. Ashley Gilbert was a force at the net, tallying 4 blocks, while Fuches added 3 blocks to round out her strong all-around performance.


GAME TWO Colorado Mesa

Cal State Dominguez Hills fall in straight sets to Colorado Mesa, losing 0-3 (24-26, 20-25, 13-23) on Saturday afternoon at the Maverick Fall Classic.

The Toros  came out strong in the first set, battling to a narrow 26-24 loss. They kept the pressure on Colorado Mesa  in the second set, but despite their efforts, they couldn't hold off the Mavericks' attack, falling 25-20.

In the third set, Colorado Mesa seized control early, using a balanced offense to take the final set 25-13 and secure the sweep.

Despite the loss, Cal State Dominguez Hills showed flashes of strong play, particularly in the opening set, and will look to regroup.

Freshman Fallon Freeman led the Toros' offense with 8 kills, while Ava Hurry and Maria Bejines-Garibay each added 7 kills. Setter Bailey Fuches directed the offense with 14 assists, while Maya Barron chipped in 11 assists and served 2 aces.

On the defensive side, Libero Nina Robles and Ava Hurry each recorded 5 digs, with Ally Sokolow contributing 4 digs. Kayly Pau, Camryn Perdue, and Ashley Gilbert each registered a block at the net to help the Toros defensively.

The Toros return to action Thursday September 19th at 7pm against Cal Poly Humboldt on the road.
