Toros Open CCAA Conference Play Toppling Lumberjacks, 3-1

ARCATA, Calif. – The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros secured a four-set victory over Cal Poly Humboldt, winning 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 15-25, 25-21) to open CCAA Conference play.
 
With this win the Toros record climbs to 4-5 overall and 1-0 CCAA. The Lumberjacks fall to 4-5 overall and 0-1 CCAA.
 
The Toros opened strong, with 12 kills while taking advantage of the Lumberjacks struggles, as the Lumberjacks hit just .063 in the opening frame. The Toros carried the momentum into the second set, posting a .229 hitting percentage and holding off a late rally by the Lumberjacks to win 25-21.
 
After a tough third set, the Toros bounced back in the fourth. Behind 14 kills and a .152 hitting percentage, the Toros closed out the match with a 25-21 win.
 
The Toros capitalized on Humboldt's 28 attack errors to finish the match with 44 kills and a .120 hitting percentage, compared to Humboldt's 46 kills and .107 hitting percentage

"It was an excellent start to conference play," said coach Teddi Esko. " I am very proud of this squad, we trained hard this week to prepare for Humboldt."

Coach Esko continued, "The Toros stuck to the game plan and they showed such grit in set four to close out the match." 
 
The Toros were led by Camryn Perdue, who posted a team-high 11 kills. Ava Hurry and Fallon Freeman each added eight kills to balance the offensive attack. Bailey Fuches orchestrated the offense with 27 assists and contributed defensively with 14 digs, while Maya Barron chipped in 10 assists and two service aces.
 
Defensively, Nina Robles anchored the back row with 19 digs, with Hurry adding 15 digs of her own. At the net, Aleya Starnes was dominant with five blocks, while Freeman added four blocks and Perdue contributed 3.
 
The Toros will look to build on this victory as they continue their Northern California road trip with a match on Saturday, September 21st against Sonoma State at 1pm in Rohnert Park.
