Toros On Winning End of Hit Parade in 11-8 Win

Box Score

CARSON -- Aaron Greenfield's 4-for-5, 3RBI performance led Cal State Dominguez Hills' 18-hit attack as the Toros broke through to win the final game of the CCAA series against visiting Cal State East Bay, taking an 11-8 win on a sunny Sunday at Toro Field.

With the win, the Toros move into 6th place in the CCAA standings and sit just .002 ahead of the Pioneers, with the top six teams qualifying for the CCAA tournament and three weekends left in the regular season.

After being swept by the Pios yesterday, CSUEB continued its momentum by taking a 2-0 lead after 3.5 innings of play.  The Toros, however, roared back with four runs in the 4th inning, the big blow coming on a 2RBI single by Greenfield.

The visitors answered right back with three in the top of the 5th to take a 5-4 lead, before Anthony Accordino tied the game with an RBI groundout in the bottom half of the frame.

The Toros continued to use that momentum with three more runs in the 6th after RBI singles by Scott Ogrin and Accordino, along with a Pio miscue bringing home Ogrin with the inning's final run.

Not to be outdone, the Pios replied with two runs in the 7th before Greenfield answered with an RBI double in the bottom half.

CSUDH used another CSUEB error in the next inning to plate an insurance run, with Eric Smelko scoring on an Eddie Morales infield single to bring CSUDH's lead to 11-7.

The Pios shaved a run of their deficit after a solo shot in the 9th, but it was too little, too late as the Toros salvaged a huge win to jump back into the top six in league play.

In addition to Greenfield's four hits, Smelko (3), Emilio Barrera (3), Ogrin (2) and Morales (2) each enjoyed multi-hit efforts.

CSUDH travels to league-leading Cal State Monterey Bay next weekend for a crucial series, starting Friday at 3 pm at the Otter Sports Complex.
