Former Toro Great, MLS Cup Champion Tony Alfaro Signs with New York City FC

NEW YORK – The New York City Football Club had announced the signing of former Cal State Dominguez Hills All-American defender Tony Alfaro to a contract for the 2023 season with an option for 2024, Major League Soccer announced in December.

Alfaro moves up north to the big city after playing two seasons for DC United, where in the nation's capital he made 43 appearances and recording one goal and one assist.

It will be Alfaro's sixth season in the top tier soccer league in the United States and Canada. He was drafted by Seattle Sounders FC in 2016 and in his rookie season he made 24 appearances while helping the club win its first MLS Cup. Following a brief stint with Mexican powerhouse Chivas de Guadalajara and former United Soccer League club Reno 1868, Alfaro made his return to MLS and sign with DC United.

A four-year letterwinner for the Toros, Alfaro started all but four of his 75 appearances in his collegiate career. His senior season was a memorable one as he was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year and All-America first team by the NSCAA, now known as United Soccer Coaches, and second team by the Division II CCA.

NYCFC, which won the MLS Cup in 2021 and reached the semifinal the following season, will kick off the 2023 campaign on February 23 at Nashville FC.
