Men's Soccer Excels in CCAA Postseason Awards

CARSON – After leading the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team to an undefeated regular-season en route to the CCAA championship, Sulaiman Bah and Eddie Soto highlight the postseason honors as CCAA Offensive Player and Coach of the Year, respectively.

In addition to Bah being selected first-team All-CCAA, midfielder Michael McKibbin, defenders David Aguilera and Zane Baumgardt were voted second-team all-conference while goalkeeper Sebastian Ascencio, forward Nick Walker, midfielder Martin Velasquez and defender Alpha Sowe received honorable mention.

Bah becomes the first Toro to win CCAA Offensive Player of the Year since Joey Chica won it in 2016. Bah ranks third in NCAA Division II in total goals (17) and second in points (44). He needs two more points to tie the program record set by both Alex Bengard and JC Bolanos in the 2000 national championship season. Bah also leads the country in match-winning goals with seven. He also etched his name into the conference's record book with five conference players of the week.

In just his fourth year at the helm of the program, Soto has brought the Toros back to its winning ways with a 13-0-5 record in 2022, clinching the university's first conference title since 2015, the same season Joe Flanagan won the last coach of the year award for Dominguez Hills. Under Soto's watch, the Toros cracked the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 in the first updated week and has stayed that way ever since, even staying in the top five for six straight weeks.

Aguilera and Baumgardt have played nearly the entire season, with each logging over 1,300 minutes on the pitch. The two have helped lead the defensive effort which has allowed only 12 goals on the season and posted 10 shutouts. Both of them were named CCAA/Pixellot Defensive Player of the Week on separate occasions.

McKibbin is currently second on the team in goals scored with six. He scored back-to-back match winners in non-conference play in Oregon that landed him CCAA/Pixellot Offensive Player of the Week.

Velasquez is currently second on the team in points with 16, scoring five goals and notching six assists. He was the hero by scoring the only goal in the Toros' upset at then-No. 1 Cal State LA, the first known upset in program history. Sowe, who like his fellow defenders Baumgardt and Aguilera wears the captains band, also played an integral role to a defensive line that has helped post the double-digit shutouts. Ascencio has split time on the goalkeeping duties and in 13 matches and nearly a 1,000 minutes of work, he has only allowed nine goals and made 34 saves while being credited for three full shutouts and three partial credit. The freshman Walker has recorded three goals and an assist in 12 appearances.

Cal State Monterey Bay's Colin O'Mahony won CCAA Defensive Player of the Year while Cal State LA took four other individual awards. Alvaro Unauna was named Goalkeeper of the Year, Daniel Garcia Midfielder of the Year, Oliver Diaz Newcomer of the Year and Marlon Radel Freshman of the Year.

After enjoying a well-earned and well-deserved bye weekend, the Toros will head to Cal State San Bernardino for the CCAA Tournament semifinal against Chico State, which cruised to a 3-0 win over Monterey Bay in the first round Sunday. The two squads square off at Premier Field Friday at 2 p.m.
