CARSON – Left-hander
Tristan Garnett may not had heard his named called in the shortened 20-round 2021 MLB Draft this week, but the Cal State Dominguez Hills starting pitcher did end up signing with the Philadelphia Phillies as an undrafted free agent.
Garnett will begin his professional career with the Phillies' Low-A affiliate Clearwater Threshers. The Threshers entered Thursday sitting in fourth place in the Southeast West Division with a 31-30 record.
A native of Portland, Ore., Garnett closed the book on his two-year stint at Dominguez Hills having started all but one of his 17 appearances, going 7-7 with a 4.56 ERA in 94.2 innings thrown. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down the 2020 season midway through the schedule, Garnett was fourth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with 35 strikeouts.
Garnett becomes the first Toro to sign as an undrafted free agent since Fernando Gallegos, who signed with the Chicago White Sox back in 2016.
