Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Top-seeded and No. 6 ranked Cal State LA scored a pair of goals in each half, and that was more than enough as the Golden Eagles earned a 4-2 decision over Cal State Dominguez Hills in the second CCAA semifinal, eliminating the Toros from the league's postseason tournament.
Barring an expected turn of events by the NCAA Championship Selection Committee, the Toros' 2021 campaign looks to have ended with a 10-6-1 overall ledger.
Josue Cartegena, who earlier was named a first-team All-CCAA selection, tallied one of the two goals for CSUDH in the loss.
Unlike the first meeting between the two teams in the regular season in which both teams came in undefeated in conference play, Cal State LA entered as the better team, equipped with the CCAA regular season crown and a No. 6 national ranking.
The Toros, however, matched their crosstown rival in nearly every category, except where it counted most on the scoreboard.
Scoreless after the match's first 10 minutes, CSUDH gifted CSULA an own goal after a hard ball sent into the scrum in front of the Toro net bounced off defender and found the back of the net.
That changed nine minutes later as Cartagena took an
Alpha Sowe feed and sent a low liner past CSULA's keep for the equalizer.
Just over two mintues later, however, CSULA took the lead for good as Gonzalo Talavera took a deflection a sent it home for a 2-1 lead heading into the break.
Twenty-five minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles added an insurance goal for a 3-1 lead, which proved necessary after
Michael McKibbin answered three minutes later to put the hosts on their heels.
With the Toros pressing for the tying score, CSULA countered in the 86th minute, with David Elizaga putting the hosts up by two with under five minutes left in regulation, sealing the win and sending the Golden Eagles to the CCAA Championship game.
The Toros outshot CSULA 12-10, with six coming on frame.
