Toros Let Lead Slip Away in San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team led for a majority of the game against Cal State San Bernardino, but Cal State San Bernardino got the final chances as the Coyotes rallied in the final minute to edge the Toros 65-63 at Coussoulis Arena Thursday night.

The Toros (8-7, 4-5 CCAA) opened the second half leading 38-32 and had built an 11-point gap halfway through the period. The Coyotes (11-3, 6-2 CCAA) would outscore the Toros 18-7 the remainder of the half to not only erase the deficit but take a 64-63 lead with 36 seconds left.

Dominguez Hills had the final possession but couldn't get a clear shot for the win.

Wonder Smith, once again, led the effort for the Toros with 23 points, including five 3-pointers. Andrew Whitsett gathered 10 rebounds, but the highlight of his night was knocking five Coyote shots, missing the program's single-game record by two. Nick Kornieck contributed to 13 points and six boards.

In a matchup against the top rebounding teams in the CCAA, it was the Coyotes who came out on top in that category 44-35, marking the second time on the year the Toros were out boarded.

Four different Coyotes reached double figures in points. Andres Villa led the team by scoring 14 along with gathering 15 rebounds.

The game started out with the Coyotes striking first. After San Bernardino's Daytone Jennings tied the game at six with a jumper, Smith connected a 3-pointer that would give the Toros the lead until the final minute of the game.

Dominguez Hills was 21-of-56 (37.5 percent) and 14-of-36 from beyond the arc. The Coyotes, on the other hand, were 27-of-62 (43.5 percent).

The Toros wrap the brief road trip Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
