Garcia Comes Up Clutch to Force Overtime but Humboldt State Prevails

CARSON – Alex Garcia scored five points within the final minute that allowed the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team to force overtime, but Humboldt State out-played the Toros in the extra period to win the only meeting between the two teams this season 98-93 at the Torodome Thursday night.

Despite going 3-for-24 overall and 0-for-9 from the 3-point line, Wonder Smith led the effort for the Toros (8-8, 4-6 CCAA) with 24 points to make it the third time in the last four games he has reached the 20-point mark. Junior Colten Kresl ended a two-game scoring funk he was in and dropped 23, including going a perfect 6-for-6 on the free throw line.

The Toros finished the night shooting 42.5 percent (31-for-73) from the field with a dozen of them coming from beyond the arc.

Humboldt (7-9, 3-8 CCAA) never cooled down, going 33-for-51 (64.7 percent) while making 22-of-33 free throws. Isaiah Pope and Robert Lewis combined for 41 points to lead the Jacks.

Dominguez Hills did win the rebounding 40-31. Jordan Hilstock went to the glass 11 times including six on the offensive side.

Down 46-37 at the break, the Toros opened the second half on an 11-2 run within the first five minutes to tie the game. While the Jacks built a 73-62 lead for the game's largest gap with 5:30 to go, the Toros went on a 12-4 run in the next four minutes to get to within three with under two to go. Garcia came up clutch within the final minute, hitting a 3-pointer to tie the game at 77 and then made a layup in response to the Jacks' bucket in between to force the game into overtime.

Humboldt opened overtime on a 6-0 run and kept the lead by more than five the rest of the game.

Dominguez Hills has one more game before beginning the spring semester Tuesday, a date with Stanislaus State Saturday at 3 p.m. The Warriors are coming off an 85-77 win at Cal State LA tonight.

The Toros beat the Warriors 82-75 in their last meeting back in November for their first win in Turlock since 2013.
