CARSON –
Andrew Whitsett scored 13 points,
Alex Garcia and
Kaden Bradley each had 11 but the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team couldn't stop a hot-shooting No. 8 UC San Diego squad in the Toros' 84-65 loss to the Tritons at the Torodome Tuesday night.
Both teams returned to action after surviving finals week in the last 10 days, and neither squad looked rusty. The Toros (7-4, 3-2 CCAA) ended the night shooting 46.4 percent (26-for-56) from the field while making 9-of-19 from beyond the arc. The Tritons (9-1, 3-1 CCAA), though, hit 57 percent of their shots including 70 percent (16-for-23) in the first half. Three-pointers became a factor in the game as UCSD went 16-for-26.
Five different Tritons reached double figures in the points column. Gabe Hadley led them all with 22 points thanks to six 3-pointers.
Despite the loss, the Toros did out-rebound the Tritons 29-23, including 11 offensive boards.
The Toros had trailed by as many as 13 in the first half. They did cut the deficit to 46-38 at intermission.
Dominguez Hills got to within three points early into the second half but couldn't complete the rally as the Tritons maintained the lead and eventually led by as many as 22.
The Toros will now turn their focus on crosstown rivals Cal State, which will come to Carson Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles resume CCAA play after blowing out Bethesda in Los Angeles Friday.
