ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Andrew Fernandes – Men's Golf
After winning the inaugural
Dr. John Johnson Invitational in his collegiate debut, men's golf freshman Andrew was named the CSUDH Athlete of the Week. The CCAA had recognized Fernandes as its Golfer of the Week Thursday.
At the Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms Monday and Tuesday, the site of this year's CCAA Championships, Fernandes shot a pair of 70s followed by a 72 in the third and final round for a total of 212, edging Cal State San Bernardino's Greg Robarge's 215 score.
Kylie Osgood – Volleyball
Kylie Osgood wins the CSUDH Athlete of the Week award after helping the defense post a win over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday.
Osgood led the effort on the defensive end by digging for 12 of 43 balls. She was also credited with three assists.
Including the match with Cal State San Bernardino, the freshman saved 25 balls to lead the Toros.
QUICK NOTES
Women's Soccer
Goals are Hard to Come by…on Either Side – The Toro offense may have only scored two goals in the last four matches but they make up for it with a stellar defensive line, for they have only allowed a CCAA best two goals this season.
About the Gators – San Francisco State is on pace to matching the number of points it had last season. The 2015 Gators gathered 15 points while the 2016 squad currently has eight after four matches. The two points came from last weekend, when the Gators played to draws against Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. Kimber Lohman had the only goal for SFSU over the weekend. With three goals on the season, she is only one behind teammate Sierra Sagasta for the team lead.
The Last Time vs. the Gators – Although Kimber Lohman scored the match's first goal in the 35
th minute, the Toros responded with
Ida Eriksson scoring twice within five minutes in the second half to lift the Cardinal and Gold to a 2-1 win in San Francisco. SFSU had outshot CSUDH 17-9 throughout the match.
About the Otters – Cal State Monterey Bay has been going back-and-forth this season, winning twice and losing twice. The Otters had recently fell to both Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona last weekend to drop to 1-3 in CCAA play. Scoring goals has been the challenge for the Otters as they have only recorded six in eight matches for the worst mark in the CCAA.
The Last Time vs. the Otters – It was all CSUMB in Seaside last year. The Otters got their first goal 2:38 into the match and added an insurance in the 83
rd to complete a 2-0 win over the Toros.
Men's Soccer
Tough One to Swallow – The Toros saw their momentum of six consecutive matches going unbeaten come to an end at the hands of then-No. 13 Cal State LA at StubHub Center Field No. 3 Saturday. The Toros were shutout for the first time since Point Loma in the season opener. CSUDH was averaging 2.5 goals per match during the six-match unbeaten streak.
Haley Comes Off – For the first time this season, senior defender
Bryan Haley was taken off the pitch Saturday against Cal State LA. Haley came into the match as the only player to have seen every minute (664) but did not start the second half against the Golden Eagles. He did check back into the match in the 56
th minute and played the rest of the way.
Chica's Streak Comes to an End – With the shutout against CSULA,
Joey Chica saw his five-game scoring streak come to an end. Chica had scored seven goals during that run which includes four penalty kicks.
About the Gators – San Francisco State returns to Southern California looking to regain momentum after being handed back-to-back 1-0 losses to Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino last weekend to end a five-match win streak. It was fouls that had cost the Gators those 1-0 defeats as the goals came on a free kick and a penalty kick. The Gators had quite a bit of momentum during that run, earning four shutouts while scoring 12 goals.
The Last Time vs the Gators – Trailing by one at the break, then-No. 6 CSUDH got two quick goals early in the second half and held on to a 2-1 win over the Gators in San Francisco last year. The Gators struck first in the 35
th minute and the Toros erased the lead with
Tony Alfaro's four penalty kick of the season followed by
Joey Chica's go-ahead goal less than three minutes later.
About the Otters – Cal State Monterey Bay is winless in its last four matches, going 0-2-2. In fact, the Otters have gone to extra minutes four times including a back-to-back 0-0 score. One of those scoreless draws were against Cal State San Bernardino last weekend. The Otters also were victims of a 1-0 defeat at Cal Poly Pomona Sunday. Adam Voloder has three of the Otters eight goals on the season to lead the team.
The Last Time vs the Otters – CSUDH had dominated Monterey Bay with a 6-0 blowout in Seaside last year. Former Toro
Matt Michell had two of those goals,
Gilberto Rocha scored the eventual match winner in the 18
th minute and made two assists.
Chase Gentry had to make only three saves on the day.
Volleyball
Getting into the Right Direction – After losing a heartbreaker to nationally-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Friday, the Toros got themselves in the win column within the CCAA season following a 3-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday. The win also snapped a four-match losing skid.
Serves You Right – Tati Yandall has been finding hardwood when it comes to serving as the redshirt freshman is averaging 44 percent in service aces to place her third-best in the CCAA. She has hit 18 aces on 41 serves.
Long Homestand Coming Up – Following this weekend's trip to the Bay Area, the Toros will play the next five matches at the Torodome starting October 7 against Cal State East Bay.
About San Francisco State – The Gators have only one win to their name this season, which was back in the season-opening weekend. Since then, SFSU has lost seven straight, with most recently getting swept by Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay last weekend.
The Last Time vs. the Gators – Then newcomer
Vanessa Phyakeo duplicated her offensive production of 13 kills from the night before but it was not enough as host San Francisco State swept the Toros 3-0 in The Swamp last year. CSUDH only hit .076 in the loss.
About Cal State Monterey Bay – The Otters have made an impressive run in recent weeks, having won six of their last eight matches. CSUMB opened a four-match homestand last weekend sweeping the Gators and edging Sonoma State in five sets.
The Last Time vs. the Otters – The Toros swept the season series with the Otters last year, winning 3-1 at the Torodome followed by a four-set thriller in Seaside.
Men's Golf
Men's golf returns to action after a week off from the
Dr. John Johnson Invitational.
Andrew Fernandes highlighted the tournament by winning it in his collegiate debut.
The Toros are no strangers to Chico State's invitational. Last year, they finished 13
th. Senior
Christopher Pham ended the tournament with a 231 (77-76-78), 15 over par. Then-freshman
William Yang posted the lowest score on the final day as he shot a 74.
