Toros Run Away to Win PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship for Second-Straight Year

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills men's golf team closed its 2015-16 season with a bang, roaring back from a one-stroke deficit to take home the 30th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship for the second-straight year, distancing itself from runner-up Texas A&M International by a staggering 17 shots.

Sunday's comeback was fueled by a trio of Toros in Christopher Pham, Drew Dufresne and Andrew Banuelos, who all shot final rounds of 73 or better.

"It was a very competitive tournament and we were trying to stay close to the lead over the first two rounds, and knew that the top four teams coming into today's final round all had a chance to win," begins CSUDH head coach Ron Eastman, obviously ecstatic.

"We knew we had to play great golf to win and Banuelos really got into a good rhythm Saturday and kept it going today.  And Pham was not at his best Friday and Saturday, but really found it today.  And Dufresne played the best Sunday, eventually getting to 3-under after 14 holes, and even though he ran into trouble later, we knew where he was at and it motivated the team.

"Bret Gleason also played really well and could have been better than 75, but he bogied the final two holes," he continued.

"All in all, they all stepped up in their last round fo the season and tied for our lowest round of the year at the right time.

Banuelos fired a 73 on the final day to give him a team best 224 (77-74-73) and a third-place finish individually, while Pham (75-79-71-225) and Dufresne (76-77-72-225) finished a stroke behind their redshirt freshman teammate.

Gleason also continued his solid play with a 227 (76-76-75), with William Yang rounding out the quintet with a 245 (85-83-77) to give the Toros a total of 901.

The Toros ended each of the first two rounds in second place, but their 291 in today's round was 10 strokes better than TAMUI.

Returning next year as a senior leader, Pham believes today's win will serve the team well in the 2016-17 season.

"Drew Dufresne said that coming from behind against some of the best teams in the nation in CCAA play gave us the confidence to do what we had to do today, and we were confident that we would bring the title back to Carson, and we did," begins Pham, who will be a senior next year.

"Winning
this title shows us that we have what it takes to be winners, and that even through adversity we can come together and succeed. This mentality will help us succeed next season."
