CARSON -- It was an unusual day for both Cal State Dominguez Hills and No. 8 UC San Diego's baseball teams with three final scores turned in on the day. In the span of 20 minutes, the Toros broke a tie with a two-run 11th inning to win the suspended game Friday 9-8. The Tritons opened the scheduled doubleheader with a 14-4 beating, but the Cardinal and Gold bounced back and claimed the evening cap, 2-0, behind solid pitching from Jeffrey Gogue to win the four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.
Brady Conlan continued to be productive at the plate as his 2-run knock in game two helped the Toros (10-9, 5-5 CCAA) secure the series. The senior third baseman went 13-for-19 in the series with three doubles, a home run and five RBI.
Gogue (2-1) got both wins being the pitcher of record during the halted game. He started game two of the doubleheader and threw 8.1 shutout innings and allowed only four hits and two walks. He also struck out three.
Game 2 Continuation - CSUDH 9, UCSD 8 (11 Innings)With Johnny Palmer on first and Adrian Padilla on second with no outs, Adrian Guzman continued the suspended game with a single off Triton reliever Brent Bell to load the bases and back-to-back hits by Polizzi (on a bunt) and Nick Morelli drove in two to take a 9-7 lead.
Peter Fierros took over in the Tritons half of the 11th running into trouble. He surrendered a walk and a double to left field put the tying runs in scoring position. A single up the middle cut the deficit to one and following a sacrifice bunt, Fierros struck out the final two to get his first save of the season.
Gogue, who had tossed 2.1 innings before the game was halted, was credited with the win without having to throw a pitch Sunday.
Game 1 - UCSD 14, CSUDH 4
Luke Laurita (1-2) had perhaps the worst outing out of his five start this season, lasting 2.2 innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits. He did strike out four.
The Tritons had scored all 14 of their runs in five of the nine innings played, including 10 in their first four. UCSD was also aggressive on the base paths as it stole five bases.
The Toros couldn't find an answer to Jack Rupe, Jr. (3-1), who only allowed three hits and a walk in a seven-inning gem.
CSUDH broke through in the eighth inning. Daryl Donerson led off with a base hit to center, reached third on Tyler McLurg's single and scored on a fielder's choice.
Three more runs were added in the Toros half of the ninth. With runners on first and second, Kevin Lugo hit a fly ball deep enough for Viktor Arreola to score from third and a standup triple by Donerson followed by a McLurg base hit drove in the third and fourth runs.
Game 2 - CSUDH 2, UCSD 0
Gogue was in complete control of the game early one. The left-hander retired the first eight batters before allowing a base hit in the third. No Triton had reached third in the game.
The two Toro runs came in the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Conlan hit into a gap on the left side that drove in Morelli from third and Polizzi from second.
Anthony Cortez eventually struck out the side despite allowing a two-out double for his second save of the season.
