Toros Comeback Attempt in the Ninth Halted by Cougars Bullpen

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team rallied back from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning, but NCAA Division II newcomer Cal State San Marcos halted the comeback attempt to lock up a 7-6 win in the California Collegiate Athletic Association series opener Friday evening.

Brandon Polizzi's two-out double down the right field line kept the CSUDH rally hope alive in the ninth. A RBI single by Adrian Guzman scored in Polizzi to cut the deficit to one. Brady Conlan tried to bring in the tying run with a hard hit to left field but was caught to end the game.

The Toros drop to 10-10 overall, 5-6 in conference play.

Polizzi had two hits but the highlight of his day was scoring in three runs. The Toros heart of the order in Conlan, Miguel Castaneda and Kevin Lugo combined for seven hits and five RBI.

Cameron Mackenzie (4-1) helped the Cougars (11-14, 3-10 CCAA) halt a seven-game losing skid by throwing seven innings, allowing only four runs and six hits.

Starting pitcher TyRay Gatewood (2-4) looked strong early in the game, striking out three with all of them looking.

But the right-hander would get himself into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases on back-to-back leadoff hits followed by a hit by the pitch to end his day. Albert Flores tried to stop the bleeding but he walked the first batter he faced to force in the go-ahead run. The Cougars would take a 4-2 lead with a sacrifice fly.

CSUSM would build upon its lead in the seventh after loading the bases again in the seventh. Flores would hit a batter to start off the inning and two straight hits loaded the bases to set up another sacrifice fly. During the process, a throwing miscue allowed the runner at second to score.

The Toros offense reignited in the eighth when Conlan hit a blast into left field to drive in Polizzi for his second score of the game. Castaneda kept the momentum going with a RBI single to right and Lugo's ground out to short drove in Conlan to make it a 7-5 deficit.

The Toros continue the four-game series Saturday, when they travel to San Marcos for a doubleheader. The two teams will return to Toro Field for the series finale Sunday at 11 a.m.
