Rossman, Bernardino and Wagner All Chosen in 2014 MLB Amateur Draft

Three Toros in (L-R) Nick Wagner, Bubby Rossman and Brennan Bernardino were drafted in the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft

CARSON -- The Los Angeles Dodgers selected senior slugger Bubby Rossman in the 22nd round to highlight a trio of Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball players chosen in the 2014 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

Junior pitcher Brennan Bernardino was chosen in the 26th round as the 785th total pick by the Cincinnati Reds while the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim tabbed senior Nick Wagner as the 929th overall pick in the 31st round to round out the three Toros selected, tying Cal Poly Pomona with the most number of selections in the CCAA.

Overall, Rossman, who was chosen No. 669 overall, was the first of eight CCAA players selected, with Chico State and Cal State Monterey Bay with one representative each.

"It was another terrific day for Toros baseball, CSUDH Athletics, our University and the entire South Bay community," said baseball head coach Murphy Su'a, who now boasts 15 of his players being drafted since he became head coach in 2007.

Rossman drew the interest of MLB scouts early as a power switch-hitting outfielder, but his versatilty as a pitcher added to his value.  Finishing the regular season 2nd in home runs in the CCAA and 6th in RBI, he also earned an All-Region Gold Glove selection after converting all 109 chances during the year while notching 7 assists, a stellar number for an outfield position.  On the mound, Rossman posted a 1-2 mark in 8 appearances, fanning seven batters with one save in 8.1 innings of work.

"Bubby Rossman had great interest early in the season from many MLB organizations as a power switch-hitting outfielder, but his pitching late in the season had made him quite attractive to pro scouts and teams," said Su'a.  "Bubby's arm is fresh and if he stays healthy will have an opportunity of pitch for many years to come."

Earning an NCBWA Honorable Mention All-Region selection and 2nd-team All-CCAA nod, Bernardino emerged as the team ace, starting the final 7 games in which he appeared.  The Valencia native finished the regular season 4th in the CCAA in ERA, 7th in strikeouts per game, tied for 10th in strikeouts, and tied for 14th in wins.  On the team, he led the Toros in ERA, wins, batting average against and strikeout-to-walk ratio, pitching at least 7.0 innings in 5 of those 7 starts while fanning at least 5 batters in six games.  Additionally, the 6-4 lefty did not allow a home run all year and just 6 extra bases in 62.1 innings pitched.

"Brennan Bernardino may have been one of the top pitchers in our conference during the second half of the season," Su'a says proudly.  "Bernardino's patience paid off as he worked hard to get his arm back into competitive form following a redshirt year."

Wagner, meanwhile, made 8 appearances on the mound while finishing with a 4.26 ERA.  However, the flame thrower with a wicked curve ball fanned 17 batters in 12.2 innings pitched, and did not allow an extra base hit.

"Nick Wagner has the fastball velocity with breaking ball and change-up action that could move him through the minor leagues quickly," Su'a commented.

The three Toros selected continues the successful trend that has seen Toros reach the next level, and marks the fourth year under Su'a that at least two Toros have been chosen in the same draft after Matt Hopps (White Sox) and Paul-Michael Klinsberg went in 2009, Kevin Pillar (Blue Jays), Carlos Leyva (Mets), Jonathan Keener (Cardinals) and Josh Corrales (Mariners) were chosen in 2011, and Carlos Avila and Ivory Thomas both were selected by the Twins in 2013.
