Toros Salvage Split Behind Perez's Tightrope Act in Nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CARSON -- Senior Joseph Perez allowed nine hits in the nightcap of today's twinbill against San Francisco State, but the Gators were able to push across just one run as the Toros took a 3-1 decision in game two after SFSU took a 3-2 decision in the opener.

The Toros improved to 19-24, 14-21 with the split, but mathematically were eliminated from the CCAA Championship Tournament after Sonoma State won its games earlier today.

CSUDH spotted Perez an early 3-0 lead after Bubby Rossman drove in Davie Steininger on a sacrifice fly in the third after Steininger walked to begin the frame.

The Toros added two more one inning later on RBI baseknocks by Steininger and Danny Haley, also taking advantage of a pair of Gator errors.

That proved enough for Perez, who scattered nine hits in the 7.0 inning, complete game nightcap in which he fanned three batters without allowing a walk.

Steininger and Haley paced the offense with two hits each, combining for 66.7% of the team's hits.

Things looked promising in the opener as well as CSUDH took a 1-0 lead after one on a Rossman RBI triple to right center that scored the fleet-footed Steininger.

SFSU took the lead with single runs in the third and fourth, only to have CSUDH tie the game in the eighth on a Peter Ives RBI baseknock.

That momemtum didn't last long, however, as the Gators scored the eventual game-winner in the ninth as a lead-off walk proved costly in the loss.

Rossman collected two hits while also collecting the loss after giving up the run in the ninth, with starter Brennan Bernardino earning a no-decision after 8.0 innings of work, fanning seven against two walks.

The two teams will conclude their CCAA series tomorrow morning at 11:00, with the game being streamed on the Toro Sports Network.
