Pioneers Score Five Late Runs to Fuel Comeback 7-6 Win

Box Score

CARSON -- Trailing 5-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning, visiting Cal State East Bay got a three-run home run and tacked on two in the ninth to provide the margin of victory in the eventual 7-6 decision in game one of the four-game CCAA series.

Taylor Kahanowitch smacked two of CSUDH's eight hits in the loss, scoring a run and driving in one as well as the Toros dropped their fifth-straight to fall to 17-20, 12-17 CCAA.

After spotting the visitors a 2-0 lead, the hosts answered with two of their own in the second on an Adrian Guzman RBI single and Rico Pena suicide squeeze that borught in Kahanowitch to tie the game.

CSUDH took the lead with three in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by Kamran Young, a Kahanowitch sacrifice fly and and a Jordan Yallen bloop single down the right field line to make it 5-2.

That lead didn't last for long, however, as the Pios tied the game with three in the seventh to tie on a 3-run jack by Jason Fletcher, who drove in five of the CSUEB runs on the day.

The visitors took the lead in the ninth with two runs on four hits, and needed that insurance run as the Toros plated one in the ninth and had a runner on third with two out, until East Bay closer Bryce Vidmar shut the door on the Toro rally by inducing a fly ball to right for the final out.

Aaron Gray took the loss after allowing the two runs in the ninth, as Hayden Maurice joined Kahanowitch with two hits each.

The two teams go at it again tomorrow in a double-header, with first pitch set for 12 noon on Toro Field.  Both games will be streamed live on the Toro Sports Network, with David Smock calling all the play by play.
